Temporary Shutdown of GST Portal: What Users Should Know

To facilitate a disaster recovery drill, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Common Portal will be temporarily inaccessible for a duration of 8 hours. The Directorate General of Taxpayer Services (DGTS), Ahmedabad (under CBIC), announced this on August 2, 2025, via X (formerly Twitter):
“Attention GST Portal Users: A Disaster Recovery Drill is scheduled for 02/08/2025 at 10:00 PM. GST services will be unavailable until 06:00 AM on 03/08/2025. Please plan your activities accordingly.”
Services Unavailable During Downtime
The following core services on the GST Portal will be temporarily out of service:
- GST Registration Module
- Payment Facility
- HSN/SAC Code Finder
- Refund Application & Tracking
- Access to Electronic Ledgers
Key Filing Timelines You Should Not Miss
Monthly GSTR-1 Filing
Registered businesses with turnover above ₹5 crore must file GSTR-1 monthly. For July 2025, the deadline is August 11, 2025.
Annual GSTR-9 Filing
For FY 2024–25, the GSTR-9 (Annual Return) is due by December 31, 2025. However, concerns have been raised by professionals that the form is currently not enabled on the portal, potentially compressing the available filing window.
There is also a request from stakeholders to release annual summary PDFs of GSTR-3B and GSTR-1 independently from the GSTR-9 tab. This would assist taxpayers in commencing reconciliation efforts earlier.
Advisory for Taxpayers
Plan your GST-related activities in advance to avoid last-minute issues during the downtime window. Staying aware of upcoming deadlines and system availability is crucial to maintaining compliance and avoiding penalties.
