A Brief on GST Audit
Under GST law, an audit is a statutory mechanism by which the tax authorities verify the correctness of:
- Turnover declared
- Taxes paid
- Input Tax Credit (ITC) availed
- Refunds claimed
- Overall compliance with the provisions of the CGST Act and Rules
This is expressly provided under Section 65 of the CGST Act, 2017.
Section 65(1) of the CGST Act empowers the Commissioner or an officer authorised by him to conduct an audit of a registered person.
An audit under GST involves examination of:
- Books of accounts
- Returns furnished (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, etc.)
- Statements and records
- Other documents as may be prescribed
